Microneedling is one of the easiest and most effective skin treatments available. As the amazing process gains awareness it is important to understand, what microneedling is, how it works and whether it is a suitable treatment for you.
Scars, wrinkles and uneven skin tone are all lacking collagen. If your body would produce more collagen then you wouldn’t get these issues in the first place, but as we get older our bodies don’t make as much. Microneedling offers our body a pathway by encouraging collagen production which helps prevent or reverse their formation. The technique of Microneedling is done by creating thousands of microscopic channels in the skin’s surface, to increase the formation of new tissue by activating the body’s wound healing process. This micro-channeling causes the release of growth factors that promote scar-less healing and the deposition of normal woven collagen rather than scar collagen.
Advantages to Microneedling include a visual and noticeable improvement in a few days from the first treatment. It is cost effective, it is way less expensive than laser treatments and less downtime as well. Short healing time (1/2 day to 2 days depending on how sensitive your skin is), there is no permanent damage or injury as the needles are designed to only penetrate a certain depth; we want to keep it shallow to stimulate the collagen production (going to deep can cause scarring and will lengthen recovery time). There is an extremely high absorption rate of active ingredients from the products that I use immediately following the microneedling treatment.
The result of microneedling is the skin becoming firmer and regaining elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles are visibly reduced, pores become finer and the overall condition of the skin improves. It is also used to treat acne scarring to improve the appearance as well.
I offer complimentary consultations to find out if you are a good candidate for microneedling. So there is no cost to you to come in and meet with me and see what the options are, learn about the procedure and how many sessions would be recommended for your particular goals.
What is Micro-needling/ CIT?
CIT stands for Collagen Induction Therapy. Microneedling and CIT are the same thing. It is a break through remedy for the treatment of wrinkles and pigmentation, and scars. Clinical studies have shown that micro-needling produces channels in the epidermis which sufficiently stimulate the body’s natural defenses to repair the produce concentrated amounts of of collagen and proteins to the treated areas of the skin. This results in the skins thickness being increased. Which visibly reduces scars, minimizes wrinkles and softening of the complexion.
The treatment introduces fine needles to the skin to create microscopic channels. In doing so the epidermis is encouraged to produce new collagen and elastin which generates new skin cells. The skin then becomes thicker, plumper and more youthful. Serums that are applied tho the skin afterwards are also up to 1000 more times more effective as the pores are opened and the product is absorbed deep into the skin.
What can micro-needling / CIT help with?
* Wrinkles and Fine Lines
* Sagging and Thin Skin
* Scars from Acne, Chicken Pox, burns and from surgery
* Enlarged Pores
* Sun Damage
What can I expect?
We will begin by applying a topical anesthetic to the treatment area. Most people don’t need it, but I want you to be as comfortable as possible.
We will remove the anesthetic cream, and cleanse the areas to be treated. You will have your treatment. Most people will describe it on a tolerance level from 1-10 at a 3. It is uncomfortable, but tolerable. Some areas are more sensitive than other areas, like around the eyes will be more sensitive than the cheeks. You will be red and a little swollen after the treatment, but that will go away in a few hours. The next day you might still have a little pinkness, but it can be covered with makeup. Don’t have this treatment right before a big event. ( I have very sensitive skin and I am red and swollen for about 2 full days). So I advise you to plan on that scenario.
Is there any downtime?
Most people experience no downtime after micro-needling. Some people have initial redness like a mild sunburn for a day or two, which can easily be covered with makeup. (you must wait 4 hours to apply makeup). Post treatment the skin will feel warm, tight and itchy for a short while. This is a normal response. Occasionally, the client might have some light peeling if the patient tends to have a more sensitive skin type.
How many treatments will I need?
That varies on the reason you are having the micro-needling done in the first place, and the severity of your situation. I am happy to discuss this with you at a service consultation. Typically, we would recommend 3-5 treatments spaced 4-5 weeks apart.
Are there any side effects from this treatment?
Side effects and risks are minimal with this treatment and typically include minor flaking or dryness of the skin, and some mild crusting. Since this is a non-ablative treatment hyper-pigmentation or darkening of the skin area treated is highly unlikely.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for this treatment?
Sure… you don’t want to do anything that would cause your skin to be sensitive. If it is already sensitive before we start then we cannot give you a quality treatment. So, no rentinoid products an entire week before your treatment. No Accutane 2 months beforehand. No tanning in a tanning bed or laying out in the sun a week before a treatment either. It really is best to schedule a complimentary Service Consultation so we can go over the procedure, your skin care issues and make sure this is the right service for you, then I go over the risk, benefits and how many treatments I think you would need. Then you decide if it is right for you, as always , there is no pressure.
